  2. Look at the conclusion paragraph in  Essay Example 1.  How could it be revised to be stronger and provide closure to the essay?
  3. Where can you find directions and examples for creating an MLA format Works Cited page?
  4. Are all the sources from the Works Cited page cited in the text of Essay Example 2?  How is this important for academic integrity?
  5. What grade would you give Essay Example 1 if you were a writing instructor?  What about Essay Example 2?  How would you justify your grades?

Introduction to the Concept

Academic integrity is a word you will often hear when writing for any program in the United States.  School children as young as 8 years old are introduced to the concept and the importance of being honest and moral in their academic lives and products.  The most common form of academic integrity is related to citing sources.  This is discussed more in the next part of this tutorial.

Having academic integrity means you can be trusted to submit only work that is your own, original ideas and, if you used information from other sources to support those ideas, you have cited them correctly.  At the University of Missouri, or MIZZOU, we have an entire office devoted to academic integrity.  (https://oai.missouri.edu/).  The essence of academic integrity is honesty.  You must be honest about what work is your own and what work is that of others.  If you want to use the work or ideas of others to support your opinion, argument, or idea then it is the law that you must cite your sources correctly.

You heard me.  It is a legal obligation to cite sources correctly.  If sources are not cited correctly and you do not acknowledge the use of sources, you are committing academic dishonesty and the punishments can be severe.  It may even result in a grade of zero on the assignment, an F in the course, or expulsion from the program and school.  We do not want this to happen to you.
