As you read, do two things:
- Use context clues to try to figure out unfamiliar words. Then, check to see if your definitions are correct. Many words are defined for you at the bottom of the text.
- Next, use each of the five Active Reading Strategies to respond to this informational text. Do these things:
- Predict: Make a good guess of what’s to come in the text based on the title, the artwork, and what has happened so far.
- React and Reflect: Make a personal response to what you read.
- Question: Ask questions about what confuses you and what you are curious about.
- Connect: Relate what you read to your life, other literature, or the world in general.
- Evaluate: Make judgements about the text and the author’s style.
