Syllabus Earth Science A

Course Overview

Earth Science A is a conceptual science course that teaches about Earth's structure, properties, and processes by using crosscutting concepts that link all branches of science. The concepts include patterns; cause and effect; scale, proportion, and quantity; systems and system models; energy and matter; structure and function; and stability and change.  In this course, students will explore topics such as mapping, the rock cycle, weathering and erosion, plate tectonics, fossils, and the geologic history of Earth. Each lesson also explores the human impact on Earth's processes.

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is that students will be able to

  1. Describe how to use maps to study Earth's surface. 
  2. Explain how Earth's systems interact.
  3. Describe how rocks and minerals record the flow of energy and the cycling of matter on Earth.
  4. Explain the destructive and constructive processes that shape Earth’s surface.
  5. Describe how humans impact land.
  6. Describe the processes that change Earth's surface.
  7. Explain how earthquakes and volcanoes impact Earth's surface. 
  8. Explain how evidence from Earth materials provides information about Earth’s formation and early history.
  9. Describe how is Earth different today than when it was formed.

 

Pacing

This course can be completed in as few as six weeks or take up to 6 months (180 calendar days). The six weeks are counted from the date of the first lesson submission and not the date of enrollment.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.  High School standing is recommended.

Required Materials

No special materials are required, however, some common household items may be needed for supplemental activities.

Your final grade will be based on the number of points you earn on assignments and exams.

The following grading scale applies only to students who meet this standard:
