Syllabus AP Comparative Government & Politics

Course Overview

In this course, you will be introduced to a survey of basic models used by political scientists to analyze and apply what they learn to a set of target countries. The main course objectives are to help you (1) develop fluency in the language political scientists use to discuss comparative government and political issues, (2) learn about the historical and current political systems of Great Britain, Russia, China, Mexico, Iran, and Nigeria, and (3) analyze and compare these political systems using six comparative themes.


Course Objectives

The students will be able to:

  • Compare political concepts and processes among the course countries (China, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, and the United Kingdom).
  • Analyze and interpret quantitative data represented in tables, charts, graphs, maps, and infographics.
  • Apply political concepts and processes in authentic contexts.

PreRequisites

There are no prerequisites for the AP Comparative Government course.  Students should be able to read a college-level textbook and write grammatically correct, complete sentences.  Having completed World History B would be beneficial, but not required.

The AP Comparative  Government and Politics textbook is available online at no cost to you. It can be retrieved at https://socialsci.libretexts.org/Courses/Mizzou_Academy/AP_Comparative_Government_and_Politics  For those students who prefer a paper copy, you can download a printable version or purchase a physical copy at the same link.

Exams

You are required to take two proctored exams for this course.  The exams will contain multiple-choice questions, as well as short-answer responses.

Grades

Your final grade will be based on the number of points you earn on assignments and exams.

The following grading scale applies only to students who meet this standard:
