Welcome

We are pleased that you selected this course to fulfill your unique educational needs. You are now a member of the Mizzou Academy's global student body.

Course Overview

This course is called Fitness for Life because we want joyful movement to be part of your daily life.  Throughout the lessons, you will be learning how staying physically fit also benefits your social and mental health.  You might recognize these dimensions as the three sides of the Health Triangle model.  We will be asking you to use this model to help you assess your overall well-being and identify areas for improvement.

In addition to determining your current personal health, you will be exploring specialized skills needed to participate in various sports to help strengthen and maintain the physical side of that Triangle. In the process, you will reflect on your aptitude for these skills and seek inspiration for application from the eighteen fitness activities featured in the course. This is all in an effort to encourage your personal growth and longevity through physical activity.

Along with these introspections, you will also be delving into the concept of health equity or making sure everyone has the same opportunities to demonstrate positive health behaviors. The social dimensions and barriers to achieving equality will be examined, and engaging in advocacy work to achieve broader health outcomes will be encouraged. For those currently experiencing these barriers, students will be shown how to use technology to create personalized healthcare communities to ensure resources for health management are available to them no matter where they live.

The course culminates in the development of a strength-focused Fitness for Life Activity Plan, where you will set achievable health and well-being goals. By course end, we want you to have a pathway towards wellness and a willingness to help others find their own direction. Together, we can stay fit for life!
